How to Navigate the Web

Definitions
Following are explanations of ways you can get around on the World Wide Web. You will be using some of these navigation features during this section of the lesson. Don't try any of these procedures until you get to the next section, called
Practice Getting Around.

Type a URL

If you know it, you can type the web address, known as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), in the address box at the top of the web browser window and press the Enter key to go to the web page with that URL. The URL is the "address" for the site, like the web addresses that you see at the end of a lot of news or other television programs. For example, the URL for this page that you are viewing now is http://www.seniornet.org/centers/demo.html. You can see it in the narrow address box near the top of this window.

Link

Click on a link on a web page to take you to another page. Links are usually words or phrases that are underlined and/or in a different color. Links can also be in the form of graphics on a web page which, when you click on them, take you to another page. When you move your mouse over a word or graphic that is linked to another page, your mouse pointer will turn into a little hand and the URL for that page will appear in the navigation bar at the bottom of your browser window.

Back and Forward Buttons

Click on the Back or Forward button on the button bar at the top of the web browser window to go to the previous page you opened.

Home Button

Click on the Home button on the button bar at the top of the web browser window to open the page that you define as "home" in your browser Preferences -- your browser's home page.

Home Page Link

Click on the word Home if it is included as a link on a page to take you to the page that is designated as the "home" page for a particular set of pages -- a web site's home page.

Favorite

Click on the name of a web page from a list of pages in your browser's Favorites that you have marked for easy access.

Practice Getting Around

You can now practice some ways of getting to and from other pages on the Web. Read through all of the instructions for each step before you start to follow them. The last part of each step lets you know how to get back to this page!
  1. To practice navigating to another page using a link and the Back button, click HERE to go to another page and then click on the Back button on the toolbar at the top of the browser window on that page to take you back to this page.

  2. Now that you have linked to another page, you can practice going to that page again by clicking on the Forward button on the browser, since you want to go "forward" to the next page in the chronological order in which you opened the pages. Click on the Forward button to go to the Link page.

To return to this page, click on the Demo Home link at the bottom of the Link page.

  3. There is another way of getting around that you should try and that is typing the URL for a page. Click HERE to go to our famous Link page or click on the Forward or Back button at the top of the browser to take you there. Once you are on that page, click in the address box near the top of the page and type the addresshttp://www.seniornet.org/centers/demo.html in the text box and then press the Enter key to go to this page.

Hint: If you select and highlight the above URL, you can copy it. Click the Edit Menu and click Copy. Then, when you get to the Link Page, click in the address box and click the Edit Menu and click Paste to paste this URL instead of typing it.

Once you are back on this page you will have to use the scroll bar on the right to scroll down the page to get back to this section.

We hope that you have enjoyed this brief introduction to navigating the World Wide Web and that you'll continue to learn more about this fascinating new medium.
