My Story
by Bob Bazet
I will attempt not to get ahead of myself in relating this story and to keep things in the proper perspective, so please bear with me!!
I was born in New Orleans, La on December 6th, 1923, baptized some 9 months later, and then traveled to Port au Prince, Haiti with my parents. My father was superintendent of a sugar refinery there. This is where I spent the better part of my child years and attended elementary school.
I was raised an only child, which proved to be somewhat lonely but on the flip side of the coin had its advantages also. I found it difficult to understand why all my friends had sisters and brothers, and I was the lone ranger in my family with no siblings to do battle with.
When I was about 10 years old one of my playmates and I got into an argument. He began screaming at me and repeating over and over again in a taunting manner, "Ha, Ha, you were adopted, you were adopted" with others joining in.
Not knowing what "adopted" meant, I ran home and confronted my mother, and told her about the incident. She became absolutely "livid" and wanted to know which one of my friends had told me this. I told her who it was and as I recall she immediately went to the phone and called the boy's mother. My memory of the conversation lingered on for days. I was still not told by my parents what "adoption" meant, but found out several months later, by an older friend who swore me to secrecy. He also told me that I was adopted from an "Orphanage" and then brought to "Haiti".
