UMSON Grant (5/11/2018) PDF Email

 SeniorNet Community,

Last year the University of Maryland School of Nursing, (UMSON) shared a valuable educational study - grant with SeniorNet. The grant included an Interactive Patient Portal eLearning Program developed by researchers from UMSON and Johns Hopkins University.

Participants were "paid to learn" how to engage and use the Patient Portal, (a secure online tool that gives patients convenient 24-hour access to their personal health information). Modules:

  • sending secure emails to health care providers
  • viewing lab results and medications
  • requesting medication renewals
  • making medical appointments
  • giving family members and caregivers access to assist with care

Education also included on-line peer group discussions and a dedicated hot line hosted by the professional staff at UMSON. Participants shared their experiences through testimonials which were included in our newsletters.

UMSON is now granting SeniorNet their Interactive Patient Portal eLearning Program (education modules and videos). This program will be included in our curriculum data base for all SeniorNet centers.

The results from the study will be published and undoubtedly help millions of seniors and their caregivers across the United States.

We thank the distinguished Eun-Shim Nahm, PhD, RD, FAAN and the University of Maryland School of Nursing for collaborating and their long-time support of our mission. We are very fortunate and grateful to have benefactors like UMSON.

SeniorNet Community,

Recent Pew Research Center surveys find that seniors are also moving towards more digitally connected lives.

  • Around four-in-ten (42%) adults ages 65 and older now report owning smartphones, up from just 18% in 2013.
  • Today, 67% of seniors use the internet - a 55 percentage-point increase in just under two decades.
  • Mobile devices have rapidly become one of the most common ways for Americans to get news, and the sharpest growth in the past year has been among Americans ages 50 and older.
  • More than eight-in-ten U.S. adults now get news on a mobile device (85%), compared with 72% just a year ago. And the recent surge has come from older people: Roughly two-thirds of Americans ages 65 and older now get news on a mobile device (67%), a 24-percentage-point increase over the past year.

....and to all of the above, we are very pleased to announce our partnership with a prominent and distinguished organization - BridgingApps
