SeniorNet wins 1999 Webby Award for Best Community Site

SeniorNet is pleased to be the winner a prestigious Webby Award, the annual award presented for the most creative and innovative sites on the Web. Honored with a Webby for excellence in the "Community" category, SeniorNet holds the distinction of being the only nonprofit among "community" nominees.

The annual Webby Awards honor Web site designers and operators for their creativity and innovation in a variety of categories. To qualify, sites must excel in content, design, and links. The award was voted on by the 220 industry members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, including actress Gillian Anderson, musician David Bowie and director Francis Ford Coppola.

Marcie Schwarz, SeniorNet's Director of Online Services, attributes our recognition for community excellence to "the efforts of our many volunteers and participants, who dedicate so much of their time and talent to support one another and collaborate on our website."

1999 Nonprofits' Policy & Technology Project Innovation Award Winner

SeniorNet is one of six U.S. nonprofits recognized for the effective use of technology in public policy activities. A finalist in the 1999 Nonprofit Technology Innovation Awards, SeniorNet was honored for its Internet-based Solutions Forums. The Solutions Forums, sponsored by MetLife, engaged older adults in online discussions to generate ideas and solutions to real world policy issues, which were then distributed to key elected officials and policy makers.

The Innovation Award is sponsored by the Nonprofits' Policy and Technology (NPT) Project, an initiative to promote the use of information technologies for public policy issues. For more information on the project, visit the NPT website.

SeniorNet named ESTHER Award Top Five Winner for 1999

SeniorNet proudly accepts the ESTHER award for Empowering Seniors Through Electronic Resources. The ESTHER is believed to be the first and only Internet award exclusively for sites that are considered user friendly and useful to the senior Internet user. Nominated by online users worldwide, over 60 sites were evaluated, and the five winners were chosen by judges for their aesthetics, content, credibility, timeliness and ease of use.

SeniorNet chosen as a finalist for a Global Information Infrastructure (GII) Community Award.

The GII Awards, a non-partisan and independent initiative, recognizes champions from all industries and sectors of society who use the Internet and network technology to produce amazing results. Vice-President Al Gore has cited the Awards program itself as "An innovation that is vital to our country's future." In eleven categories, GII Awards go to individuals, businesses and organizations who are using the information superhighway in collaborative, innovative and results-oriented ways.
