SeniorNet Huntington Reaches Milestone at 2015 Summer Party
A Walk Down Memory Lane
The year was 2000 when SeniorNet at FSL, L.I. decided to celebrate its volunteers and their very supporting spouses with a summer party. Ruth Skolnick volunteered her lovely house on the shores of Eaton’s Neck beach for this event. Since then our membership followed with annual summer gatherings at La Casa Café in Northport, some years at the Eaton’s Harbor Corporation Beach and recently at the Huntington Town Beach in Centerport.
On August 14, 2015, SeniorNet volunteers, their guests, spouses, family members and friends celebrated the 15th anniversary of this summer tradition. We’ve come a long way since the first summer party that had 20 guests in attendance to this year which drew a large crowd of volunteers and guests.
The day was sunny, warm and very special; we enjoyed a delicious catered Italian meal from Jonny D in Greenlawn under attractive Hawaiian decorations supplied and put up by Nina Saporito with the assistance of John Koller and Pat McAsey (tall men needed). We were also treated to a special “Art Show” of paintings created by our very own “Rembrandt” Russ Day that were raffled off free to attendees.
Our very generous volunteers also contributed to Family Service League “Back to School” supplies to help underserved children obtain needed supplies for their first class in September.
The honorable Councilwoman Susan Berland and senior aide Linda Levine payed a visit and greeted our volunteers as longtime friends. Because her first official function after election to the Huntington Town Board was to attend the 2001 SeniorNet Annual Meeting, SeniorNet has remained extra special to Susan and she pledged her ongoing support.
As we look back to all our volunteer summer events, 2015 was certainly a very good year. In the beginning, Sandy Marquez and Slava Vero organized these events but passed the baton to newcomers Nina Smith and Sally Healy. Since then the “New” Special Events Committee has grown into an exceptional committee under the leadership of Nina Smith. Mary Clark, Misao Bauchich, Regina Goodrich, Nicki Muolo and Fran Martin have all contributed their talents and dedication to make this event memorable.
Our thanks and appreciation go to the Nina Smith team, the Nina Saporito team and a very special thanks to Russ Day for the generous donation of his wonderful framed art, which will provide fond memories of this day for the lucky raffle winners. We missed Russ and his wife at this event, but could not compete with his daughter’s 50th birthday celebration. Below are two intricate drawings Russ created to commemorate this event.
