Dear Chairman Smith,

It has been over a year that I had to separate myself from the Board of Directors of SeniorNet. I really came to admire SeniorNet, its mission, members, volunteers, and leadership.

Parents Alliance has developed a really good educational portal specifically aimed at Hispanic adults, I have been thinking about the need that exists in parts of the country where low-to-medium income Hispanics don't have the opportunity join our PACT Program® that teaches Digital Learning and Financial Literacy in Spanish.

The program brings many benefits to our students. In just 32 hours they learn computer basics and financial literacy. Even though we teach these courses mostly at schools, we have had people who join our Virtual Class and learn through an online tutor. However, the project I want to propose to you is even better.

Since SeniorNet volunteers and the leadership team are skilled professionals --- they could act as "mentors/guides" teaching Hispanics how to use the computer under our Self-Study program.

Even if the SeniorNet volunteer doesn't speak Spanish this will not be an issue. All we need is for them to teach a few very basic things that we have in a written guide:

  • How to connect a computer
  • How to turn on and off a comptuer
  • How to use the mouse
  • How to use the keyboard
  • How to open an email account. This is a little bit more difficult, but we already have detailed step-by-step instructions.
  • How to access our Superate y Triunfa portal

Once they reach this point, they can proceed by themselves. All the instructions are easy to follow.

I know that SeniorNet has engaged in programs to help children read as well as reaching out to the American Indians by placing learning centers on reservations. You have also reached out internationally.

If we could partner and make this work, we would be able to approach thousands of adults in the U.S. and it would be a great collaboration.

SeniorNet Leadership at its Best
Two of the most valuable assets we have are thought-leadership and the implementation of good ideas by our volunteers.
 
The SeniorNet Center located at the Upper West Side JCC in Manhattan exemplifies these assets with their innovative approach to reach into the community.

Our Learning Center, located at the JCC on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, has introduced an intergenerational program of computer workshops pairing a senior and a teen. The program is a collaboration between SeniorNet and the JCC's Teen/Tween Department.  

 

The workshops are scheduled one Sunday a month for 90 minutes and have a specific topic. So far we have had sessions on Phones, Mac computers, and Facebook. Our objective is to have the teens work one-to-one on the day's topic with the seniors and to answer any questions that they may have.

 

We held a training session for the teens prior to the start of the program in which we discussed their experience working with older adults and the qualities that make for an effective teacher. The teens were given a handout, "10 Tips for Teaching Older Adults", and participated in a simulated teaching situation.

 

Each workshop is supervised by SeniorNet volunteers and the JCC Teen/Tween staff. We work closely with the Teen/Tween staff to assure that the one-to-one ratio is maintained. In the event that a teen is unable to attend, the SeniorNet volunteer fills in as an instructor. If a senior participant is absent, the SeniorNet volunteer becomes the student with the teen as the instructor.

 

Feedback from both seniors and teens has been very positive. The teens enjoy sharing what they know and gain from the social interaction. From our seniors:

 

I was very satisfied with the help I received from Tatiana. She was very bright, as well as knowledgeable about the particular device I am using (Samsung Galaxy). She was very patient, answered all my questions, and voluntarily wrote out instructions for one particular procedure. I would give her an A+ as an instructor.

 

I was paired with a nice young gentleman (I believe his name was A-J...) He was patient with me, and helped me to solve a couple of problems I had such as deleting superfluous addresses from my Main contact list, how to deal with sending attachments, etc. I wish to come to such problem solving sessions more often. Keep up the good work! Thanks again.

Seniors Train in New Technology
HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas -- For more than 25 years, Hot Springs SeniorNet has provided older adults with computer and technology training courses to enhance their lives and introduce them to a world of information online.

Since 2003, the Senior Center on Woodbine Avenue has increased its enrollment numbers from 20 to 30 students to an average of 100 students for each session.

"We currently have around 70 students," said Paul Woodward, instructor. "We have two classrooms here and can teach about seven or eight students in each class."

SeniorNet offers three sessions annually with classes ranging from topics like computer basics to utilizing social media. They also offer day workshops.

"Our classes are one day a week and are about one to two hours long," said Rosemarie Kawlewski, co-coordinator for Hot Springs SeniorNet. "Each student gets a manual and with two coaches and one instructor for each class, they get hands-on instruction."

"Some instructors stay after class to help," said Cheryl Denison, instructor and website coordinator. "If I see a student who's really struggling, I try to help them individually. Our job as instructors is to encourage our students."

Every instructor is a former student of the program and with around 34 volunteers, Hot Springs SeniorNet is able to cater to its students' needs.

"Each chapter operates a little differently, but all of our manuals and teaching materials come from our national headquarters," Denison said.

But occasionally during a class, the instructor will go to a website or check their email and students will want to know how they did it.

"For those things we don't have in the manual, our students will scramble to take notes," Kawlewski said. "They're so enthused to learn and that is exciting for us."

Because of this excitement, the volunteers at SeniorNet said very rarely do students not come back for more courses. And once students are comfortable with their new skills, there is a whole world online available to them.

John McFerrin, who teaches courses on Internet and email said one of his favorite websites to show his students is YouTube.

"You can find videos on any topic and learn how to do just about anything," McFerrin said.

And for people concerned they may not catch on as quickly in the courses, the volunteers at SeniorNet suggest enrolling with a family member or friend.

"We've had several students enroll with their siblings or spouses and that really helps them," said Beverly Jackson, instructor. "They can help each other and they'll also have a friend. Though many of our students become friends."

And it's not just the students who benefit from SeniorNet.

"We get a lot out of the courses," Kawlewski said. "It keeps us thinking and busy and as long as we're helping people, we're making a difference."

Registration for the Spring session will be on March 22 at the Senior Center and classes will start on April 8
